For this weeks additional homework task. I would like you to comment on this post. You will need to put two comments:
1. One thing you still don't understand about the film
2. Something that you found interesting when you learnt it in class

The second part of your task is that you will need to comment on 3 different comments providing an answer to their question.

Homework due Thursday 6th June

Hey everyone,
Just a reminder that your homework for the rest of the term will now be due on Thursdays for the rest of the semester. So for this week you will need to pick one of the prompts from the page on the right hand side and that will be your piece for this week. You will have to write a piece addressing each of those prompts before the end of the term. So pick the one you feel comfortable addressing this week but be aware that you will not be able to avoid the one you don't like.

Your first prompt for a Reading and Responding piece due in Friday 31st of May is:

"On the Waterfront shows that being true to oneself is more important than being loyal to one’s friends.” Discuss.

For this writing style it needs to be in the structure of a TEEL paragraph and needs to contain quotes.

You need to write a Creating and Presenting piece that addresses the prompt:

Conflict occurs between the powerful and the powerless

You can choose to write either a persuasive, expository or creative piece and you do not need to attach a statement of intention.

Welcome

Welcome everyone to 2013 On The Waterfront.

As you can see I have esablished a blog that will contain most of the information that you will need to complete for this unit. On the side there are study guides, assignments that will need to be completed this unit and suggestions for additional reading.

At several points throughout the unit all of you will be expected to write comments and posts that you will all get to see and contribute to. This is a fantastic opportunity for you all to learn from each other as well as learning for the students from last year too. But this only works as well as you all make it.

So good luck and watched out for those canarys.

I just wanted to say a very quick thank you to you all. I don't think I can truly explain all the things that I have gained from knowing you all and all the fascinating things I have learnt about you all and myself. I could not wish you enough luck for what you all deserve but I will try my hardest. I wish you all the best for the exam and hopefully they exam questions will be the same as those for the SACs throughout the year so it is a little easier for you all. Please call in after the exam and tell me how you went (if I can't get there due to having a class). Once again, thank you; for everything.

Who is Responsible?

The question from the exam that most people chose to write about. Well who is ultimately responsible? If you could only pick one person who you feel is the MOST responsible for Joey Doyle's death who would it be?

Attitude, Behaviour and Commitment Review

I would like to draw all of your attention to the page on the right titled "Attitude, Behaviour and Commitment Review. I would like every student to comment in this page answering the questions that have been provided. I have provided a sample response from my own perspective to assist you. This will need to be completed during Exam Week.

1.“You don’t ask no questions. You don’t answer no questions unless you want to wind up like that.” Examine the workers’ responses throughout the film. Why are those so reluctant to speak out against the crime and injustice that they are exposed to?

2.Edie and Father Barry represent the moral consciousness of the group. They both encourage others to stand up for what is right. How do Edie’s words, “Did you ever hear of a saint hiding in a church?” serve as a catalyst for Father Barry to act?

3.Johnny Friendly’s interactions with his posse of followers inside The Bar reveal a lot about the corruption that exists within the Longshoreman Local Union and the ways in which Friendly maintains control. Make a list of the ways in which this loyalty is insisted upon by Friendly and his henchmen.

4.One of the key factors in Terry’s life is his lack of education and his simplicity. How do these scenes establish this? Keep a list of the references to Terry’s education in the film. When does his posture and demeanour change in the film?

5.Is Johnny Friendly a completely unsympathetic character? Justify your responses with evidence from the text.

Homework Due Friday 1st June

Hey everyone,
Just a reminder that the small sheet of questions that I handed out tomorrow during class are due on Friday next week which is the 1st of June. One word answers are not expectable.  You should be aiming for a minimum of a paragraph for each question.

Ok I have just been fiddling with the blog and I have sent you all an invitation to be a group member. Now you will need to be a group member before you can comment or post. Hopefully this should make things a little easier. 

For class tomorrow you will need to work on providing a paragraph responding to the prompt in the section titled Essay Prompts. You need to save it as a new post and you are required to comment on at least 3 other posts with suggestions on how they can improve their piece.
